This Tutorial has been written to explain how to work with Sumatra and Weightmaps.

At first, we need a terrain object. Open modeler, select the box tool and press N. Now, enter the following values:

Width:100 meters

Height: 0 meters

Depth:100 meters

Segments x:50

Segments y:1

Segments z:50

Close the numeric window and press space. Now, create a new Weightmap with 0%.

Change the display mode for the perspective view to "weight shade" and activate the Airbrush tool. Now, paint parts of the terrainmesh red. Make sure, that the painted areas are 100% red.

Now, start Sumatra.

In the "Object" tab, choose the palmtree_low.lwo from the sumatra objects folder and enter 50 clones.

In the "Rotation,Size&Offset" tab, enter the following values:

min/max rot H: 180

min/max rot P: 6

min/max rot B: 6

Size min: 100%

Size max: 200%

Now, choose your weightmap in the "Altitude,Weights&Color" tab and press OK.

Sumatra has now only placed the objects over the red areas of your weightmap. You can also invert the weightmap with the "invert Weightmap" Button.
